What is important?

Part of being in the business of fitness and health is the inevitable occasional crash you get inside when you give over and over again to improve others.

I don’t want you to read this and think this is me complaining about what I do; on the contrary, I absolutely love what I do but we are all heading for crashes because we often neglect ourselves in the process.

I have online clients, I train people in person, I answer emails, texts, help solve problems and concerns, and I give of myself to improve others’ lives.

Where does that leave me?

This is an issue we often come across in our day to day lives when you work in a business that is about service to others.

We forget to serve ourselves.

When was the last time you took time out of your life to take care of you? I don’t mean meal prep, gym time, massage time, or personal growth time.

I mean you, doing nothing meaningful, just taking that time to be by yourself with your own thoughts and company.

That is hard for many of us because we are conditioned to hustle. We are driven to bust our asses to make our names known and respected as a “trainer in demand” because of the success of the clients we lead.

All that is fantastic and noble but what about you?

What have you done lately to take care of your mental needs?

Have you walked around your city aimlessly with nothing planned just to explore it?

Try it… I did that tonight and discovered a shop I didn’t even know was there. Made Urban Apparel was the name of the store. I walked in, looked around, talked with the dude working the store tonight, bought a new shirt to support local business, and I will be back to that place.

Walked further through downtown, just aimlessly… and on my way home I found a little dive bar to stop and get a drink at while watching the Duke v North Carolina game. This place is called Qudo’s. It is not far from where we live, very walkable distance, and a chill AF place to hang out for a drink or two.

Granted this IS a dive bar so you aren’t going to get some hipster drinks or artisan food, but not every bar needs to have crafty cocktails and duck fat fries.

My walk tonight led me to two places I had no idea existed and they were right around the corner from where we live.

Right under my nose really.

In my day to day life I am moving around trying to make shit happen, when we go out on the weekend we always go to some cool bar where the liquor selection is superb, but I found two little gems I didn’t know existed…

All because I took time for me tonight. No goals, no deadlines, nothing planned, just ‘let’s just walk around’.

I came back from a day of “me” feeling pretty refreshed and cleansed from the stresses of the week.

It’s been a while since I have taken time to truly allow myself to do nothing meaningful, so this was needed.
